Can you send me information on the Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award Contest? I am a middle school student that wants to nominate my social studies teacher for this award, as he focuses on flag education in class.
Each year, three exceptional teachers are recognized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) for their outstanding commitment to teach Americanism and patriotism to their students. The VFW annually recognizes the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics and promote America’s history and traditions effectively.
The Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Awards (Teacher of the Year) include the following items:
• A $1,000 award to the top K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 grade teachers for professional development expenses.
• A $1,000 award for each winning teacher’s school.
• Plaques for both the winning teacher and school.
• An all-expenses-paid trip to attend a VFW conference and receive their award.

All resources needed for VFW chairmen to conduct the Teacher Award Program is online now under “My VFW.” Visit this website where you can access all of the VFW’s Online Membership System (OMS) services available to our VFW members and leaders. After you LOG IN, click on CHAIRMAN GUIDES under the General Members Tools and Resources heading and browse through that page to see all of the Programs materials that are available (look under Citizenship Education.)
If you have any questions, please e-mail VFW Program Coordinator Tammy Beauchamp, or call her at (816) 756-3390 ext 287.
