Can you send me information on the Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Award Contest? I am a middle school student that wants to nominate my social studies teacher for this award, as he focuses on flag education in class.
Each year, three exceptional teachers are recognized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) for their outstanding commitment to teach Americanism and patriotism to their students. The VFW annually recognizes the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics and promote America’s history and traditions effectively.
The Smart/Maher VFW Citizenship Education Teacher Awards (Teacher of the Year) include the following items:
• A $1,000 award to the top K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 grade teachers for professional development expenses.
• A $1,000 award for each winning teacher’s school.
• Plaques for both the winning teacher and school.
• An all-expenses-paid trip to attend the VFW National Convention to receive their award.
To read more about the contest, and to download a nomination form, please click here. Please note new deadlines beginning in the 2015-16 VFW Program year.
All resources needed for VFW chairmen to conduct the Teacher Award Program is online now under “My VFW.” Visit this website where you can LOG IN, then click on VFW TRAINING AND SUPPORT. You then click on the Community Service, Youth Scholarships and Activities link. All resources are located there. Please also print off the Chairman's Manual (that link is on the right-hand side of that webpage.)
If you have any questions, please e-mail VFW Program Coordinator Tammy Beauchamp, or call her at (816) 756-3390 ext 287.
