Please know that Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen student entries will be returned if they are mailed to VFW National Headquarters in Kansas City.

For Voice of Democracy, the audio CD or USB device (with your own voice reciting your written essay word-for-word), the actual matching computer-typed essay (for both Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen) and completed student entry form must be delivered to your nearest local participating VFW Post by November 1, 2016 (for the 2016-17 program year.) This Post should be located within your local area and your state of residence. If the nearest VFW Post to you does not participate, then the next nearest (that does participate) should be used. Students can only enter into one VFW Post's contest. You can locate a participating VFW Post by visiting this link, and entering your zip code (and look for the Voice of Democracy or Patriot's Pen logo.)   Voice of Democracy is for 9th - 12th grade students, Patriot's Pen is for 6th - 8th grade students (students must be in these grades as of the Nov 1, 2016 deadline.)  This contest is conducted annually.

You can also contact your VFW Department (state) headquarters office to see if they can offer any information or assistance in finding a Post.  You can visit this link and look to the extreme far right side of that webpage (see the second grey box) for “VFW State Contacts” to get your VFW state office’s phone number and e-mail.  Some VFW Departments have websites.

You may also contact the VFW National Headquarters Programs Department (in Kansas City, Missouri) to get further assistance....our email is or you can call 816-756-3390 ext 6117 on weekdays during our normal business hours, which are from 8:15 am to 4:30 pm Central Time.

After you have determined your Post, contact the Post representative/chairman directly to let them know you have an entry and to arrange delivery before mailing or personally delivering your packet to them.  Because not all Posts participate, it is the responsibility of the student to determine that the Post is participating before an entry is turned in.

To download an official student entry form, please visit the VFW Programs website for Voice of Democracy or Patriot's Pen. You can also learn about our Scout of the Year Scholarship, or the Smart/Maher Citizenship Education Teacher Award contest
